Advanced Hip, Knee and Foot Surgery

Welcome to Advanced Hip and Knee Surgery - a service dedicated to applying the most up-to-date and effective surgical and rehabilitative treatments for sports injury and arthritis (wear and tear) related conditions of the hip and knee in the Manchester, Cheshire and Wirral region. This service is headed by Mr Hammad Malik - Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon / Honorary Lecturer. He is backed up by a team of experienced and specialised physiotherapists, anaesthetists and radiologists and has access to all modern imaging methods including rapid access to MR and CT scans. Dedicated physiotherapists are available for all patients with regards to rehabilitation from sports injury and degenerative disease treatment.

We receive nationwide and local referrals from GPs, other consultant colleagues and physiotherapists based upon our excellent clinical outcomes and full patient involvement in the decision making and treatment processes with regard to each individual's particular needs.

Professional Profile:

Mr Malik studied at Lincoln College, Oxford and Trinity College, Cambridge. He then trained in orthopaedic surgery achieving an international reputation in the field of lower limb surgery for his research work in joint replacement and sports-related injury. His success was recognised by the unprecedented move of his being awarded both the highly coveted British Orthopaedic Foundation and British Association for Knee Surgery Travelling Fellowships, training at The New York Hospital for Special Surgery and The Sydney Mater Hospital. He then completed a one year fellowship in complex hip and knee surgery at Wrightington Hospital. Mr Malik is an internationally recognised figure in the field of joint replacement having published widely on this subject, being the recipient of a multitude of research grants including those from The Royal College of Surgeons and The Wellcome Trust and is a reviewer for a number of leading journals including The British Journal of Sports Medicine.

Hip:

Mr Malik is one of a small number of surgeons in the UK who can offer arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery of the hip which is particularly useful in the diagnosis and treatment of painful hip disorders in young adults. Surgery for younger, active patients and mini-incision surgery are particular interests of his. He has extensive experience in hip resurfacing ('Birmingham Hip'), ceramic hip replacement, mini-incision and revision hip replacement and is on the International Evaulation Group for the newest form of the Birmingham Hip.

Knee:

Mini-incision and revision knee replacement, cruciate ligament reconstruction, cartilage repair/transplantation and arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery.

Foot & Ankle:

Injuries around the foot and ankle, forefoot and bunion surgery.
